The French Leaving Cert oral exam can feel pretty daunting, but here's the good news: the questions that come up are actually quite predictable. Examiners tend to ask about the same core topics year after year, which means you can prepare solid answers in advance and walk into that exam feeling confident and ready.

To help you do exactly that, I've put together a list of 50 possible French Leaving Cert oral questions covering all the typical topics. Go through them, prepare your answers, practice saying them out loud, and you'll be on top of your game by the time the orals come!

What Topics Come Up in the French Oral?

The oral exam typically lasts about 10~12 minutes and covers a range of everyday topics. The examiner wants to have a natural conversation with you, so the questions are all about your life, your opinions, and your experiences. Some of he main topics include:

  • School and subjects
  • Family and home life
  • Hobbies and free time
  • Future plans and career
  • Holidays and travel
  • Part-time jobs and pocket money
  • Social media and technology
  • Health and lifestyle
  • The environment
  • Current events and issues in Ireland and France

Tip: Don't just memorise answers word for word. Learn them well enough that you can say them naturally and adapt if the examiner follows up with a different angle.

How to Use These Questions

The best way to use this list is to go through each question and write out a short answer in French — around 3 to 5 sentences max. Then practice saying your answers out loud. If you can, record yourself so you can hear how you sound. You want your answers to flow naturally, not like you're reading from a script.

A few things to keep in mind when preparing:

  • Use a variety of tenses — present, past (passé composé), and future. This shows the examiner you have a strong command of the language.
  • Give opinions — phrases like je pense que, à mon avis, and je crois que impress examiners.
  • Don't panic if you don't know a word — try to work around it or use a related word. Examiners are not expecting perfection.
  • Speak at a natural pace — it's better to speak a little slower and clearly than to rush through and make lots of mistakes.

Remember: the examiner wants you to do well. They're not trying to catch you out — they're giving you the chance to show off what you know. Go in prepared and confident!
